Blank DVDWhat makes a blank DVD? There are 2 main formats of blank DVD. DVD-R and DVD+R. These are write once discs. That is, you write to them and the data on the blank DVD cannot be erased or written over. Once these blank DVDs are recorded, that's it. The standard blank DVD can store up to 4.7GB of data or 120 minutes of video. If you need a blank DVD which can store more data that this then you may consider dual layer or double layer blank DVD. If you need a blank DVD that can be recorded over again and again then you need DVD-RW or DVD+RW. |

Blank DVD Re-writableThis type of blank DVD can be re-written many times. The data capacity and storage time is the same as a standard blank DVD, at 4.7GB / 120 minutes. The difference is that these blank DVD discs can be erased and re-recorded, often up to 100 times. This is really the blank DVD equivalent of the old VHS video tape. The obvious benefit of using blank DVD over VHS is quality of recording and durability. Please note that this type of blank DVD may not be as compatible as a standard, write once blank DVD when it comes to playback on DVD players. |
Dual / Double Layer blank DVDThis is the DVD-R version of high capacity blank DVD. There is often some confusion on this issue but generally, a Dual Layer blank DVD will be DVD-R and a Double Layer blank DVD will be Double Layer. Both formats are double the capacity of a standard blank DVD. They can store up to 8.5GB or 240 minutes of video. This makes double layer or dual layer blank DVD far more useful than the standard size disc. The price though does reflect this. We are please though that the price of double layer and dual layer blank DVD is finally falling to reasonable levels and have seen a real upturn in sales of this blank DVD format. |
Blank CDBlank CD or CDR is an older product that Blank DVD but basically the same principles apply. The standard Blank CD is 700mb or 80 minutes compared to 4.7GB / 120 minutes for a Blank DVD. Blank CD is mainly used to store music but can also be used to store any kind of data files and many video formats. Unlike Blank DVD, a standard Blank CD disc can be written straight from Windows XP without the need for extra software. |
